Atmospheric Fluidized bed combustion (AFBC) is a combustion technology used to burn solid fuels.
In its most basic form, fuel particles are suspended in a hot, bubbling fluidised bed of Bed material (sand, refractory granules, limestone etc.) and ash through which jets of high pressure air are blown to provide the oxygen required for combustion. This results in fast and intimate mixing of gas and solids promotes rapid heat transfer and chemical reactions within the bed. FBC plants are capable of burning a variety of low-grade solid fuels, including most types of coal and woody biomass, at high efficiency.
The high concentration of bed material along with controlled and staged air supply ensures that combustion temperatures do not exceed 950°C making it environment friendly (lesser production of NOx).
For any given thermal duty, FBC furnaces are smaller than the equivalent conventional furnace, so may offer significant advantages over the latter in terms of cost and flexibility.
Fuels such as Coal (most grades), Washery rejects, Lignite, Petcoke, Rice husk, Wood Chips, Wood bark, DOB, Paper mills sludge etc. can be effectively burnt in AFBC Boilers.
Other Biomass / Agriculture wastes like Bagasse, Bagasse Pith, Mustard straw etc. can also be fired up to some extent mixed with conventional fuels.
AFBC technology offers several advantages for industrial steam and power generation :
